Deaf Identity Morning

On Monday 4th July 2016, all the P-HIC pupils got together, with a deaf child from a different school,  and enjoyed a morning of “Deaf Identity” activities. First they went on the internet and looked at lots of different hearing aid designs and ideas for decorating and personalising hearing aids after which they designed their dream hearing aid or cochlear implant. Pokemon seemed to be a popular choice as was Spiderman, Batman, Frozen and Football!
After break, Mrs Beange taught them a signed song called “Good to be me.” They played various  instruments, such as drums, maracas, boomwhackers and chime bars, to accompany the song.
Finally, they watched a Charlie Chaplin video. Miss Meade’s Literacy group have been researching into this famous actor from the silent movies era and told the rest of the children that they had found out that Charlie Chaplin had worked a lot with a deaf actor called Granville Redmond with whom he used to communicate using American Sign language. The children all enjoyed a very funny film clip of Charlie in a food factory trying out a feeding machine!
